Project Description

#### Making a Splash in a Coastal Living Space Located just minutes from Maroubra Beach, Mr. David Russo’s home already enjoyed sea breezes and natural light—but it lacked a focal point that could define the open-plan living area. Like many modern homes in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, the interior featured crisp white walls, polished timber floors, and minimalist decor. The brief: introduce a bold feature wall to add warmth, contrast, and sophistication without overwhelming the existing style. In Maroubra, coastal homes often lean into soft neutrals and sandy tones to reflect the surrounding environment. Our task was to break up the space subtly and strategically, using colour and texture to create visual interest while maintaining a clean, beachside aesthetic. After exploring samples, we settled on a rich slate blue with velvety undertones, contrasted by warm wood accents and matte white trims. #### Surface Design and Application The chosen wall—behind the living room media console—required preparatory work, including a full sand-down and surface level check to eliminate imperfections that would stand out in low-sheen finishes. We used a base primer tinted to match the topcoat to ensure colour accuracy and opacity. Paint selection was vital. We applied Dulux Design Suede in “Ocean Depth,” a premium interior paint that produces a tactile finish and subtle texture variation with light changes throughout the day. This added dynamic dimension to the wall, making it an artwork in itself. Installation took less than two days, thanks to pre-planning and efficient scheduling. Taping, edging, and careful brushing techniques were used to maintain crisp lines against surrounding white walls. We also installed LED uplighting to softly highlight the new wall during evenings—a cost-effective way to maximise impact. #### From Blank Canvas to Bold Centrepiece The end result was dramatic yet tasteful. The new feature wall gave the space identity, providing a visual anchor that complements the coastal style while making the living room feel more cohesive. It now serves as a perfect backdrop for family photos, seasonal decor, and intimate gatherings. In suburbs like Maroubra, where natural light and relaxed living define lifestyle, a feature wall can introduce balance and intentional design without clutter. For homeowners seeking transformation without a full renovation, this approach offers creativity, personality, and strong return on investment.
